I program the multi selector so that I get 100% zoom when pressed in the middle. I also program the command dial on the back so when viewing the photo you can flick back and forth between the same focus point on different pictures. Having done this I now always take a burst of 3-4 photos when photographing a subject. By viewing the 100% photo and flicking back and forth between the burst pictures I can see what pictures offers the best sharpness and subsequently delete the blurry, out of focused ones.

I hope you understand this trick and can use it in any way. I use it all the time as the D200 is a very sophisticated professional machine and not as forgiving as my old D70.
